Who are Molasses & Sidetrack?
Molasses & Sidetrack are hikers, and Molasses & Sidetrack are our trail names. Prior to starting hiking more seriously, with the goal of completing every trail in the Connecticut Walk Book, we spent a lot of time in the kitchen. One of the things we've enjoyed doing together since we got married in 1999 is learning to cook. We started pretty simple, with pasta and casserole's. We've graduated to more complex dishes now, even though we do still enjoy a hearty casserole, and Sidetrack could probably live off pasta if he was allowed to.
Sidetrack specializes in breakfast and baked goods. He will bake a loaf of bread every weekend if time allows, and his pancakes are absolutely lovely. He's been known to whip up quite the impressive dinner on occasion too.
Molasses specializes in cooking dinners on a small budget, and while she loves to cook with really hearty, healthy ingredients, she also likes to indulge once in awhile too so while it may be all Baked Chicken, Asparagus and Quinoa one day, it could very well be Mac and cheese with Guinness in it the next day. Molasses likes to create household products too, so you will also find recipes here for things like mouthwash, nasal emollient, laundry detergent, and things like that.
Both Molasses and Sidetrack like to explore the cuisine of other cultures. Everything from Dutch Baby Pancakes for breakfast to Haggis, Neeps & Tatties, or a lovely Sauerbraten for dinner. Whether you like your food simple or totally exotic, there's bound to be something here for everyone.
You'll find real food here. Molasses and Sidetrack believe in eating real foods. You can make substitutions if you like, but you won't find Margarine, Sugar Substitutes, or any other artificial ingredients in any of our recipes. We believe in eating real food, and full-fat products as much as they're available. You can make substitutions to suit your needs/desires, if you like, but we can't guarantee the taste or textures will be right if changes are made, especially to baked goods.
